Kharge Says Election Commission Must Protect Its Independence on National Voters’ Day
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the Election Commission of India is facing sustained pressure and must protect its independence. He made these remarks on the occasion of National Voters’ Day, celebrated every year on January 25 to mark the foundation of the Election Commission.
Kharge warned that actions like “Vote Chori” and unplanned Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls can snatch the right to vote from citizens and harm India’s democratic system. He said such practices tarnish the long-cherished democracy of the country.
The Congress chief emphasized that a free and fair election system is essential for a strong democracy. He urged authorities to ensure that all eligible voters can exercise their voting rights without fear or interference. Kharge called on citizens to remain alert, protect their right to vote, and actively participate in strengthening the democratic process.
National Voters’ Day also serves to encourage young people to register as voters and take part in elections.
