Delhi Water Bill Surcharge Waiver Extended Till August 15

Delhi Water Bill Surcharge Waiver

Delhi Water Bill Surcharge Waiver has been extended till August 15, offering relief to thousands of households struggling with pending dues. Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma announced the extension on Friday, saying the government took the decision after receiving multiple requests from public representatives and resident welfare associations.

Importantly, more than three lakh consumers have already benefited from the scheme. According to the Minister, nearly 16 lakh domestic consumers still have pending water bills. Therefore, the extension aims to give more residents time to clear dues without the burden of late payment penalties.

Moreover, since the scheme’s launch, consumers have received rebates worth ₹1,493 crore. At the same time, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has successfully collected ₹430 crore in revenue. Consequently, officials expect recoveries to rise sharply in the next billing cycle once updated bills reflect the waived surcharges.

Delhi Water Bill Surcharge Waiver allows domestic consumers to pay only the principal amount. Meanwhile, the government fully waives the late payment surcharge as a one-time relief. The Minister explained that the government targets recovery of nearly ₹5,000 crore in pending dues, while waiving surcharges amounting to ₹11,000 crore.

Earlier, on October 14, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a complete surcharge waiver for domestic consumers until January 31. However, several technical issues in DJB’s billing system prevented many residents from availing the benefit. Therefore, the government decided to extend the deadline and resolve system-related problems simultaneously.

Additionally, the Delhi government plans to introduce water Lok Adalats across the city. These forums will help consumers resolve billing disputes on the spot. As a result, residents will no longer need to run from office to office for corrections.

Meanwhile, officials believe the scheme improves public trust and strengthens DJB’s financial health. Furthermore, the initiative encourages timely payments and reduces long-pending disputes.

Finally, Minister Verma urged eligible consumers to take advantage of the extended deadline. He assured that the government remains committed to simplifying billing, improving service delivery, and ensuring affordable access to water for every household.
