A Kerala court has granted statutory bail to Unnikrishnan Potti, the prime accused in the Sabarimala gold loss case.
The decision was made because the Special Investigation Team (SIT) did not file a chargesheet within 90 days of Potti’s arrest. Under Indian law, if the chargesheet is not filed in this time, the accused becomes eligible for statutory bail.
Potti was arrested in connection with the loss of gold from the door frames of the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) at the famous Sabarimala temple. He had already received bail earlier in another related case about gold missing from idol plates.
Now that bail is granted in both cases, he is expected to be released from jail soon. The court’s order follows legal rules and does not mean Potti is innocent — the case will continue in court.
