Gujarat Marriage Registration Rule Raises Questions on Personal Freedom

A new rule in Gujarat about marriage registration has raised concerns about personal rights. The rule requires parental consent for certain marriages to be officially registered. Critics say this goes against the right to personal freedom guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Article 21 protects the right to life and personal liberty. The Supreme Court of India has clearly said in many judgments that adults have the freedom to choose their life partner without interference from family or society. The court has also stated that individual choice and dignity are important parts of fundamental rights.

Legal experts believe that making parental consent necessary may violate these rights. They argue that once two people are adults, their decision to marry should be respected.

The issue has started a debate about balancing family involvement with individual freedom and constitutional rights in marriage matters.
