The Supreme Court has clarified the role of Aadhaar in elections. On Monday, a bench led by Justice Surya Kant, the future Chief Justice, and Justice J.B. Pardiwala rejected political parties’ demand to use Aadhaar as the only proof of citizenship in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The judges said Aadhaar can be used only as one of many valid ID documents. It cannot become the sole proof for voter registration. They reminded parties that the Aadhaar Act clearly defines its limits. Courts cannot extend Aadhaar’s role beyond the law.
The bench also pointed out that its earlier constitutional ruling on Aadhaar still applies. No political demand can go against it.
RJD counsel Prashant Bhushan argued that nearly 65 lakh names were removed from Bihar’s voter list. He said Aadhaar was not accepted as the only proof of identity. The judges responded firmly. They said Aadhaar’s use cannot go beyond the law. The electoral process must follow legal boundaries, not political pressure.
