PM Modi Punjab Visit: Prime Minister to Assess Flood Damage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting flood-affected areas in Punjab, meeting residents and reviewing relief operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on September 9 to take stock of the devastating floods that have left the state reeling. The visit comes as the death toll has climbed to 48, with more than 2,000 villages submerged and nearly 3.9 lakh people affected.

According to officials, the Prime Minister will tour Gurdaspur district, one of the worst-hit areas, where thousands of families have lost homes, crops, and livestock. Modi is expected to interact with flood-affected residents, review relief operations, and hold meetings with state authorities, disaster management teams, and security forces leading rescue efforts.

The Centre is also likely to announce a special relief package for Punjab. Sources suggest the package may include financial aid for rebuilding infrastructure, compensation for crop losses, and additional resources for medical and veterinary relief.

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has already sought assistance from BJP-ruled states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, stressing that Punjab needs national solidarity in this crisis. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who is currently recovering from illness, has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted supply of food, drinking water, and medicines in flood-affected regions.

The visit comes at a crucial time as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy rainfall in Punjab over the next two days, raising fears of fresh flooding and outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Residents and local leaders have welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, hoping it will speed up relief distribution and rehabilitation measures.
