Massive protests in Nepal today pushed the KP Sharma Oli government to the brink as Gen Z protesters set fires and vandalized property across the country. The unrest grew stronger after Prime Minister KP Oli lifted the ban on social media to address youth anger, but the move backfired and triggered fresh violence.
The first paragraph again: Massive protests in Nepal today pushed the KP Sharma Oli government to the brink as Gen Z protesters set fires and vandalized property across the country.
Protesters stormed the home of President Ram Chandra Poudel, setting it on fire and sharing videos of the damage online. Residences of former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and Sher Bahadur Deuba, along with Energy Minister Deepak Khadka’s home, also came under attack.
With chants of “stop killing children,” thousands filled Kathmandu’s streets. Demonstrators accused Oli’s government of ordering police to target young protesters with deadly force. Many demanded Oli’s resignation as ministers began resigning under pressure.
Curfew orders now cover several regions, including Kathmandu. Despite stone-pelting and arson, police avoided using force, fearing more backlash.
The protests began after Nepal blocked social platforms like Facebook, X, and YouTube for not registering under new rules. Tens of thousands rallied, chanting “Stop corruption, not social media,” sparking what is now called the “Gen Z protest.”
