Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly supported US President Donald Trump’s new trade move, saying Zelensky backs Trump tariffs on India over Russian oil. Speaking to ABC, he said that countries continuing business with Moscow are fueling Russian aggression and must face consequences.
Trump recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, including 25% extra duties for India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. New Delhi called the action “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” while repeating its call for peace in Ukraine.
Zelensky argued that Russia uses its energy exports as weapons. He urged both the US and Europe to stop buying oil and gas from Moscow. “We need more pressure on Putin. Energy is his weapon, and we must take it away,” he said.
He also criticized European nations still trading energy with Russia, calling it “not fair.” Asked about Putin’s meeting with Trump in Alaska, Zelensky said, “It’s a pity Ukraine was not there. Putin wanted to show the world he is important.”
Zelensky rejected Putin’s invite to Moscow, saying, “He can come to Kyiv. I can’t go to Moscow when missiles are hitting my country.”
The remarks came just before Trump warned of more sanctions on Russia after its largest aerial attack on Ukraine killed four people in Kyiv. Zelensky backs Trump tariffs on India over Russian oil, underlining his demand for stronger US action.
