Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah Urges Unity, Patience

Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah addressing citizens, urging Gen Z protesters to stay united and patient as Nepal moves toward an interim government.

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah appealed to Nepal’s youth to stay calm and united as the country enters a major political transition. His remarks followed weeks of Gen Z-led protests that forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign.

The protests began after the government blocked social media platforms but quickly expanded into a broader movement against corruption, unemployment, and political neglect. Thousands of young demonstrators flooded Kathmandu’s streets, demanding new leadership and reforms.

Mayor Shah acknowledged the frustration of the younger generation but urged them to act with discipline as leaders begin forming an interim government. “Your unity is your strength,” he said, warning that rushing into confrontation could derail progress.

He backed the proposal to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim head of government. Shah argued that her reputation for fairness and independence could help stabilize the nation and ensure credible elections soon.

While praising Gen Z protestors for their courage, Shah reminded them that real change requires patience. He emphasized that Nepal must channel youth energy into constructive democratic reforms instead of destructive violence. “Passion must go hand in hand with patience,” he added.

The situation in Kathmandu remains tense. Authorities have enforced a strict curfew, and soldiers patrol the capital. Officials report dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Government buildings, offices, and tourist areas have suffered damage during the unrest.

For many young Nepalis, this marks the first time their voices have shaped national politics directly. Shah’s call for unity and restraint underscores the need to balance change with stability during one of Nepal’s most turbulent moments.
