The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur Dumka–Rampurhat railway line. The project will cover 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal at a cost of Rs 3,169 crore.
This Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway project will improve train mobility and service reliability. It will also reduce congestion and support regional development. As a result, both freight and passenger trains will run more smoothly.
The project will connect five districts in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Moreover, it will improve access to important religious sites such as Deoghar’s Baba Baidyanath Dham and Tarapith Shakti Peeth. This is expected to attract pilgrims and boost tourism.
In addition, around 441 villages and nearly 28.72 lakh people will benefit from better rail services. The new tracks will also make it easier to move coal, cement, fertilizers, and stones. Therefore, freight capacity will increase by 15 million tonnes per year.
The project also supports India’s climate goals. By offering greener transport, it will reduce carbon emissions and cut fuel imports. Overall, this move is part of the government’s PM Gati Shakti Master Plan to build a stronger and more connected India.
