South African province to strike pact with Kerala on climate-resilient infrastructure, marking a significant step in international collaboration. The agreement will focus on sustainable urban development, flood management, and resilient building practices. South African province to strike pact with Kerala was discussed during the Kerala Urban Conclave 2025 in Kochi on September 12, 2025.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar at the inaugural function. Also present were Martin Meyer, Member of the Executive Council for Public Works and Infrastructure, KwaZulu-Natal Province, and Minister M.B. Rajesh. The talks emphasized sharing best practices and expertise in tackling climate-related challenges.
KwaZulu-Natal, which includes Durban, has been the hardest hit by climate change among South Africa’s nine provinces. The region faces recurring floods, coastal erosion, and infrastructure vulnerability. Kerala, with its experience in flood management and sustainable urban planning, will collaborate with KwaZulu-Natal to develop climate-resilient projects.
Officials said the pact will cover knowledge exchange, technical training, and joint planning of urban infrastructure projects. The partnership is expected to strengthen ties between India and South Africa while promoting sustainable development in both regions.
