India to Deport 16,000 Foreign Nationals Linked to Narcotics Trafficking: Sources

Immigration authorities in India preparing deportation of foreign nationals linked to narcotics trafficking.

India is preparing to deport nearly 16,000 foreign nationals allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking, according to government sources. The move, facilitated under provisions of the new immigration law, is being described as one of the toughest crackdowns against cross-border drug crimes in recent years.

Officials said the deportation drive comes after months of intelligence gathering by multiple agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), state police forces, and immigration authorities. The identified individuals reportedly belong to over 30 countries and are accused of playing roles in smuggling, distribution, and financing of narcotics operations across India.

The new immigration law empowers authorities to fast-track deportation proceedings against foreign nationals found guilty or under trial for serious offenses, including drug trafficking. Sources indicated that India’s decision is also aimed at sending a strong deterrent message to international crime syndicates exploiting its porous borders and maritime routes.

States like Punjab, Goa, Maharashtra, and Delhi, which have reported significant narcotics-related arrests involving foreigners, are expected to see the highest numbers of deportations. Officials are coordinating with embassies and consulates to ensure the process adheres to diplomatic protocols.

Experts say the move underscores the government’s dual strategy of strengthening domestic enforcement while tightening immigration laws to cut off external support to drug networks. However, human rights groups have urged authorities to ensure due process and avoid arbitrary action.

If executed as planned, this will mark the largest mass deportation of foreign nationals linked to narcotics crimes in India’s history. Officials believe the decision could significantly weaken international drug cartels operating in the country.
