India Adds 23 GW Renewable Capacity in FY26

India added 23 GW of renewable energy capacity between April and August this fiscal year. This progress brings the country closer to its 500 GW target by 2030, according to Union Minister Prahlad Joshi.

At the “FT Live Energy Transition Summit India” in New Delhi, Joshi highlighted that India had already crossed the halfway mark of its 500 GW goal. The country now gets 50% of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources. This achievement comes five years ahead of schedule.

Joshi also mentioned India’s progress under the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He pointed out that the Surya Ghar solar program, part of the PM’s initiative, has benefited 20 million homes so far. The target is to reach one crore households.

India’s renewable growth has outpaced many countries. Among the G20 nations, it is the only one aiming to meet the 2030 target early. The country is leading in solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects.
