Bihar River Erosion Rising Threat Across Districts in November

Bihar river erosion has become a serious concern this November, surprising both residents and engineers. For the first time, major rivers like the Ganga, Bagmati, and Mahananda are eroding land even after the flood season. Bihar river erosion has already displaced families in Bhagalpur, Munger, Khagaria, and Katihar, where large portions of land have slipped into the rivers.

In Bhagalpur, people left their homes when over 100 feet of land sank into the Ganges at Manik Sarkar Ghat. Authorities placed geo-bags to slow the erosion. In Munger, villages like Kutulpur and Jafarnagar also lost homes, and many remain at risk.

In Katihar’s Manihari Kheria, erosion washed away houses and crops. Efforts using boulder aprons and geo-bag slopes did not work. Khagaria faced heavy damage in villages such as Mathar, English Tola, and Sonvarsha. Experts believe that silt buildup and new bridges are blocking river flow and forcing the water to carve new paths.

As rivers try to return to their old natural courses, many areas are seeing fresh erosion. Officials admit they are unsure why this unusual pattern is happening in November.
