India has called for fair and transparent economic practices to ensure global trade benefits everyone. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed this during a virtual BRICS summit held on Monday.

Jaishankar said the world needs a stable and predictable environment for trade and investment. He explained that non-discriminatory and rules-based systems must be protected. According to him, global supply chains should be resilient, reliable, and less dependent on disruptions.

The meeting was hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and attended by leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and others. Discussions mainly focused on trade disruptions caused by U.S. tariff policies.

Jaishankar noted that increasing barriers and complicating transactions will harm trade. Instead, he urged countries to adopt constructive and cooperative approaches that support sustainable trade. He also highlighted how the Global South is struggling with food, energy, and fertilizer security.

“India strongly believes economic practices must be fair and transparent,” Jaishankar said. He added that BRICS nations should set an example by reviewing trade flows among members.

India faces one of its biggest challenges with a large trade deficit with China, and Jaishankar emphasized the need for faster solutions with BRICS partners.
