Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) faces a leadership race after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned over July’s election losses. The party lost control of both houses of parliament, reflecting voter anger over inflation, corruption scandals, and the influx of foreign workers.

The next leader must unify a divided party while facing an opposition demanding tax cuts. With Japan’s heavy debt load, these pressures could unsettle markets and investors.

Several contenders are in the spotlight. Sanae Takaichi, a hard-line conservative inspired by Margaret Thatcher, leads recent opinion polls. If elected, she would become Japan’s first female prime minister. Shinjiro Koizumi, son of a reformist ex-PM, represents a younger, reform-minded generation but faces skepticism from right-wingers. Yoshimasa Hayashi, Ishiba’s close aide, offers stability and continuity.

Other hopefuls include Takayuki Kobayashi, a younger conservative focused on economic security and ties with Taiwan, and Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato, who is seen as a bridge-builder. Toshimitsu Motegi, a seasoned negotiator, stresses economic policy reforms, while Kono Taro, known for his digital reforms and blunt style, pushes for tighter monetary policy.
