Madras High Court Brings Deepak Into Jayalalithaa’s ₹13.69 Crore Tax Arrears Case
The Madras High Court has allowed J. Deepak, nephew of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, to be impleaded in the case concerning tax arrears of ₹13.69 crore. The court passed the order after noting that his sister, J. Deepa, had filed a writ petition challenging the recovery proceedings issued against their late aunt. The original tax demand, earlier stated to be around ₹36.56 crore, pertains to income-tax and wealth-tax liabilities assessed for the years 1991–92 to 2011–12, later revised to ₹13.69 crore.
Deepa argued that the proceedings were invalid since they targeted a deceased individual and lacked essential supporting documents. However, since both Deepa and Deepak have been officially declared Jayalalithaa’s legal heirs, the court held that Deepak must also be part of the case. The judge directed that he be added as a respondent within the stipulated time, ensuring both heirs are included in the ongoing tax dispute.
