The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections recorded a historic voter turnout of 66.91%, the highest since 1951, and delivered a sweeping mandate for the NDA, which secured 202 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, followed by JD(U) with 85. However, the election also marked a steep decline in Muslim representation, with only 11 MLAs elected—down from 19 in 2020 and 24 in 2015.
AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, fielded 23 Muslim candidates and won five seats, primarily in Muslim-majority regions. The RJD fielded 18 Muslim candidates, securing three wins, while Congress sent 10 and secured two victories. JD(U) nominated four Muslim candidates, with only one winning a seat. Other parties such as CPI(M), BSP, and Jan Suraaj fielded Muslim candidates but failed to win.
The 11 Muslim MLAs elected in 2025 include:
• Mohd Zama Khan (JD(U), Chainpur)
• Faisal Rahman (RJD, Dhaka)
• Asif Ahmad (RJD, Bisfi)
• Osama Shahab (RJD, Raghunathpur)
• Abidur Rahman (Congress, Araria)
• Md Qamrul Hoda (Congress, Kishanganj)
• Mohammad Murshid Aalam (AIMIM, Jokihat)
• Md Tauseef Alam (AIMIM, Bahadurganj)
• Mohd Sarwar Alam (AIMIM, Kochadhaman)
• Akhtarul Iman (AIMIM, Amour)
• Ghulam Sarwar (AIMIM, Baisi)
One of the closest contests unfolded in Balrampur, where AIMIM’s Adil Hasan lost to BJP by just 389 votes. The reduction in Muslim MLAs reflects a shifting political environment, with votes splitting across multiple parties and communities re-evaluating their electoral strategies. With the NDA’s decisive victory and a narrowed minority presence in the Assembly, Bihar’s political landscape enters a new phase of realignment.
