The Supreme Court contempt notices issued to 51 corporate hospitals have created a major stir in Delhi’s healthcare sector. The apex court took action after finding that several private hospitals failed to provide free treatment to economically weaker section (EWS) patients as ordered earlier.
The Supreme Court contempt notices target hospitals that received land at concessional rates from the government. In return, these hospitals must reserve 10% inpatient beds and provide 25% outpatient treatment free for poor patients. However, the court found serious violations of these rules.
A bench led by Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and N.V. Anjaria warned hospitals to explain why contempt proceedings should not begin against them. The court also said authorities may withdraw government concessions given to the hospitals.
The Supreme Court also directed Delhi government officials and hospital representatives to prepare a proper system to ensure free treatment for poor patients in the future.
