Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje said the four new Labour Codes aim to build a “Viksit Bharat” and ensure social security for mine workers, including contractual staff. She called on the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) to raise awareness about the Codes and adopt modern technologies to improve mine safety.

Speaking at DGMS’s 125th Foundation Day in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Karandlaje highlighted the organisation’s century-long role in protecting mine workers. She praised the dedication of workers who face risks daily and stressed that mining contributes directly to India’s growth story. The minister reiterated that worker safety remains the government’s top priority under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “First Safety” vision.

Karandlaje underscored the need for uniform safety standards across mining operations and called for closer coordination between central and state authorities. She urged DGMS regional offices to play a proactive role in enforcing safety norms. The minister also acknowledged the sacrifices and tireless efforts of generations of mine officials and workers.

On the occasion, Karandlaje inaugurated the DGMS exhibition, old records section, and models gallery. She released a new DGMS logo, the organisation’s theme song, and a digital coffee table book documenting its journey. A souvenir compendium of best practices in mine safety was also unveiled to celebrate DGMS’s contribution to sustainable mining.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly has passed amendment bills increasing daily working hours in shops, companies, and factories from 8 to 10 hours. However, the total weekly working limit of 48 hours remains unchanged.

As per the new rules, factory working hours, including break time, should not exceed 12 hours in a day. Employers must also provide rest breaks after every six hours of duty to ensure worker well-being.

The bill also introduces stricter conditions for women employees working night shifts between 7:00 PM/8:30 PM and 6:00 AM. Employers are required to obtain their consent before assigning night duty. In addition, companies must provide safe transport facilities and adequate security for female staff.

The government stated that these changes are aimed at improving efficiency while maintaining worker rights and safety. The move marks a significant shift in labor policies across Andhra Pradesh.
