WHO Seeks Details from India on Export of Contaminated Cough Syrup

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested a formal clarification from Indian health authorities regarding the possible export of contaminated cough syrup linked to recent child deaths. The move follows reports of toxic ingredients, such as diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol, being found in some locally manufactured syrups.
A WHO official stated that a global medical product alert would only be issued after verifying whether the affected products were shipped to other countries. The request aims to assess potential international exposure and ensure timely action to prevent further harm.
Indian authorities are expected to provide detailed information on the manufacturers involved, export records, and testing procedures. This development comes amid growing global concern over the quality and safety of Indian-manufactured medicines, especially those exported to low-income countries. The outcome of India’s response will determine if further international action or product recalls are necessary.
