Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, 24 November 2025. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office. The event was attended by key dignitaries including Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior ministers, Parliament leaders, and former Presidents and Vice Presidents.
Justice Surya Kant succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, whose tenure ended on 23 November 2025 after serving six and a half months as CJI. PM Narendra Modi congratulated the newly appointed Chief Justice and extended best wishes for his tenure.
Justice Surya Kant, currently 63 years old, will serve as CJI until 9 February 2027, giving him a term of nearly one and a half years. Known for his clarity, balanced judicial approach, and significant contributions to constitutional and human rights jurisprudence, he is expected to focus on reducing case pendency, strengthening judicial transparency, and enhancing the use of technology in courts.
Legal experts believe his tenure will bring renewed emphasis on judicial reforms and improved access to justice.
