The Winter Session began with controversy after Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury brought her pet dog to Parliament, triggering sharp criticism from BJP leaders. When questioned, Chowdhury defended herself, saying the dog was harmless and that “the government doesn’t like animals.”
BJP MP Jagdambika Pal demanded action, calling it misuse of parliamentary privileges. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla went further, accusing Chowdhury of insulting Parliament and its members, and urged her to apologise. He alleged that Congress prefers “drama over discussion” and is disrupting Parliament intentionally.
Parliament security sources, however, clarified that her entry did not violate any SOP, as only unauthorized persons getting out of a vehicle would constitute a breach.
The Lok Sabha was already tense due to Opposition protests demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Speaker Om Birla urged members to maintain decorum and engage in meaningful debate, but continued sloganeering forced adjournment till noon.
