Bihar Groundwater Level Drop: Rainfall Fails to Stop Fast Decline

Graph showing Bihar groundwater level drop in districts like Bhojpur and Patna West

The Bihar groundwater level drop has become a serious concern, even though the state received good rainfall this year. Many districts are reporting a sharp fall in groundwater, and experts warn that the situation may worsen. The Bihar groundwater level drop is most visible in Bhojpur, where the water level has reduced by nearly 15 feet compared to 2019.

After October, the groundwater in Bhojpur reached 12.1 feet in 2019, 17 feet in 2024, and 26.09 feet in 2025. Similar drops are seen in 18 other districts. Rural areas are affected the most. Districts like Sitamarhi, Madhubani, and Gopalganj in North Bihar have also seen a fall of more than four feet compared to 2019.

Some districts show a mixed trend. Nalanda, Nawada, Bhagalpur West, Banka, and Samastipur saw slight improvement from 2024, but levels are still lower than in 2019. Because of the falling water levels, PHED has requested a central plan to use river water for drinking. A proposal worth ₹1795 crore is awaiting approval.

Experts say the next summer may see more decline if winter months receive less rainfall.
