Governor CV Ananda Bose caused a tense moment during a major marathon event in Kolkata on Sunday. The incident occurred at the start of the World Athletics Gold Label Race. Instead of flagging off the runners, the Governor fired a starting pistol at close range.
Videos from the event show his aide-de-camp repeatedly urging him to raise the pistol above his head. The official advised him to fire safely into the air. The Governor, however, ignored the instructions and pulled the trigger near his face. The sudden shot startled nearby officials and participants. Several people stepped back instantly and covered their faces in panic.
No injuries were reported, but the act raised serious safety concerns. A starting pistol is not lethal, yet experts stress that proper protocol must be followed. The incident quickly spread across social media platforms. Many users criticised the action as careless and unnecessary.
The episode also triggered a wider debate online. Several commentators described it as an example of image-driven behaviour overtaking discipline. Opposition supporters accused the ruling establishment of prioritising publicity over safety norms.
The marathon continued without disruption, but the moment overshadowed the event. Authorities have not issued an official clarification so far.
