Maharashtra BJP chief Ravindra Chavan clarified his recent remarks about the late former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, saying he never meant to insult or demean him. His comments had sparked criticism from Deshmukh’s family and political opponents.
During a BJP event in Latur ahead of municipal elections, Chavan had said that Vilasrao Deshmukh’s influence in the city might be fading. The statement drew immediate backlash from supporters of the late leader.
Riteish Deshmukh, Vilasrao’s son, responded on social media, stressing that a leader who dedicated his life to the people leaves a lasting legacy. He wrote that while words can disappear, the memories and contributions of a respected leader remain in the hearts of the people.
After the reaction, Chavan issued a statement to clarify his position. He said he respects Vilasrao Deshmukh as a senior leader and had no intention to belittle him. Chavan explained that he wanted to highlight the BJP’s focus on development compared to Congress’ emphasis on legacy in Latur. He also expressed regret if his words hurt the Deshmukh family.
Congress leaders strongly condemned Chavan’s remarks, saying they were disrespectful to a leader who had contributed significantly to Maharashtra’s progress. They added that public discourse should recognize the work of senior leaders.
The remarks and subsequent debate come at a sensitive time, with municipal elections approaching in Maharashtra. Latur has emerged as a key battleground, and political parties are closely monitoring public perception and legacy issues.
