Punjab Faces Worst Floods in Decades, CM Mann Appeals for Relief

Punjab is reeling under the heaviest floods the state has witnessed in decades. Continuous rain and overflowing rivers, especially the Sutlej, have inundated thousands of acres. Large parts of the district are still under water, forcing families to abandon their homes. Villagers have shifted to safer areas or makeshift camps, while rescue teams continue to evacuate those stranded.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the release of ₹60,000 crore which he says is pending with the Centre. According to Mann, the state urgently requires this financial support to compensate farmers, rebuild damaged infrastructure, and provide relief to families who have lost everything.

Across Punjab, over a thousand villages are submerged, and farmland spread across lakhs of acres has been destroyed. The state government has opened relief camps and is providing food, drinking water, and medical supplies. The National Disaster Response Force and Army have also joined the rescue efforts.

As a precautionary step, schools in flood-hit districts will remain shut until September 3. Officials are carrying out field inspections to assess losses. For now, residents of Tarn Taran and neighboring areas continue to wait for both relief and rehabilitation.
