The Union Cabinet approves increase in Supreme Court judges to improve the speed of the judicial process in India. The move aims to reduce the growing number of pending cases in the country’s top court.
The Union Cabinet approves increase in Supreme Court judges from the current strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, to 38 judges. The decision came during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The government plans to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament soon. The proposal comes at a time when the Supreme Court currently has more than 92,000 pending cases.
Officials believe that increasing the number of judges will reduce the workload on the judiciary and help deliver faster justice to people. The last increase happened in 2019 when the number of judges rose from 31 to 34.
Under Article 124(1) of the Constitution, Parliament has the authority to decide the number of judges in the Supreme Court.
