The women entry in places of worship debate has reached a crucial stage. The Supreme Court reserved its verdict after hearing arguments for several days.
A nine-judge Constitution bench examined important questions on religious freedom and gender equality. Chief Justice Surya Kant led the bench during the hearings.
The judges heard arguments for 16 days. Lawyers discussed whether restrictions on women entry in places of worship violate fundamental rights.
The issue began after the court’s 2018 ruling on Sabarimala Temple in Kerala. The court allowed women of all ages to enter the temple.
Later, several groups filed review petitions against that decision. The Supreme Court then formed a larger bench to examine wider constitutional questions.
The upcoming judgment may clarify how courts balance religious traditions and constitutional rights in India.
