The Supreme Court has allowed the Election Commission of India to continue the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across the country. The court said the Election Commission has full authority under Article 324 of the Constitution to carry out the voter verification process.
The Supreme Court verdict on voter list revision came after several petitions challenged the Election Commission’s decision to conduct the SIR exercise. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Jaymalya Bagchi, ruled that the process does not violate constitutional rules or election laws.
The court said accurate voter lists are important for free and fair elections. Judges also noted that the revision process will improve transparency and strengthen public trust in the electoral system. The verdict now clears the way for the Election Commission to continue voter list updates in different states.
