The Supreme Court gets five new judges after the Central Government approved the names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. The appointments increase the strength of the apex court to 37 judges, bringing it close to its sanctioned strength of 38. The move aims to improve judicial efficiency and help clear pending cases faster.
The newly appointed judges include four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana. The Collegium recommended their elevation in May 2026 after reviewing vacancies and upcoming retirements in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court gets five new judges at a time when the judiciary is working to strengthen its capacity and reduce case backlogs. Legal experts believe the appointments will improve the court’s functioning and ensure quicker disposal of important cases.
The appointments received approval from the President, and officials have issued the necessary notifications. With these additions, the Supreme Court moves closer to its full sanctioned strength, helping it meet growing judicial demands across the country.
