The Nepal government took a sensational step by banning 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, X, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced the decision on Thursday. According to the ministry, the companies ignored the required registration rules with the government.
Officials said they gave the platforms enough time to complete the registration process. However, the companies failed to respond. The ministry added that fake IDs on these platforms spread hate, rumors, and cybercrime, which caused unrest in society.
Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung stated that the government issued repeated notices asking the companies to register in Nepal. Since they did not comply, the government imposed the ban.
Users across Nepal soon reported they could not access Facebook, YouTube, X, and other platforms. The Nepal government aims to ensure accountability, prevent misuse, and maintain peace and order with this move.
This decision has sparked debates about internet freedom, regulation, and the role of global tech companies in smaller nations like Nepal.
