IMD Issues Red Alert for Gujarat, Heavy Rainfall in Rajasthan

“Flooded streets and waterlogged areas in Rajasthan after heavy monsoon rains and dam overflow”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in parts of Gujarat and a yellow alert in several districts of Rajasthan, warning of intense rainfall over the next 48 hours.

In Gujarat, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Patan, and regions of Saurashtra-Kutch will face very heavy downpours. Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, and Kheda may also see strong showers, while South Gujarat remains under an orange alert. Authorities have advised fishermen to stay off seas because of rough conditions.

In Rajasthan, Jaisalmer authorities declared a holiday for schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday to ensure safety. District collector Pratap Singh said the decision followed the IMD warning of heavy rain. He also directed staff to report for duty and warned of strict action against absentees.

Dausa district recorded more than 177 mm of rain. Overflow from the Haripura dam flooded several roads, keeping relief teams on high alert. During his visit to the flood-hit areas, Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announced ₹16 crore to repair nearly 650 schools and 16 dams.

The IMD reported that a deep depression lay over North Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan near the Rajasthan-Pakistan border early on September 8. The system was centred 150 km southwest of Barmer and is likely to weaken into a depression by Monday afternoon as it moves into southeast Pakistan.
