Macron Struggles to Pick Fifth Prime Minister in Debt Crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron is searching for his fifth prime minister in less than two years as France faces mounting debt and deep political divisions. Francois Bayrou, who lasted just nine months in office, will resign after lawmakers rejected his deficit-cutting plans. He had replaced Michel Barnier, who quit after losing a no-confidence vote last December.

Macron now faces a tough choice. If he picks another centrist like Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu or Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the outcome could mirror Bayrou’s quick downfall. A leftward turn could mean appointing Socialist leader Olivier Faure, who has shown interest, but that risks angering the right. On the other hand, choosing someone from the Republicans such as Bruno Retailleau would come with limited support, as his party holds only 49 seats.

Some believe an elder statesman like Bernard Cazeneuve or Jean-Yves Le Drian could unite moderates, while Finance Minister Eric Lombard has also emerged as a bridge between Socialists and Macron’s pro-business camp. A final option is a technocrat such as central bank governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau, but that would signal political failure.
