The Amritpal Singh parole plea reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court after he sought temporary release to attend the winter session of Parliament. A Division Bench told the Punjab government to decide on his request within a week, preferably before the session begins on December 1. The Amritpal Singh parole plea aims to secure his presence in the House as the elected MP from Khadoor Sahib.
Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry questioned senior advocate RS Bains about Amritpal’s preparation for the session. They asked what issues he planned to raise and how he intended to contribute. The judges reminded him that an MP must speak for the public and not remain silent inside Parliament.
Bains argued that Khadoor Sahib is facing a crisis. Almost 800 villages in the constituency are struggling with floods, and he said Amritpal should address this situation in Parliament. He also stated that they sent representations for parole to all authorities on November 13.
Additional Advocate-General Chanchal Singla told the court that Amritpal did not follow the formal format for his request. The Bench then asked the state to treat the representation as a proper application.
Amritpal’s petition highlighted that he won the 2024 Lok Sabha election with a strong mandate despite his NSA detention in Dibrugarh. He urged the court to ensure a timely decision so he can carry out his parliamentary duties.
