The killing of kabaddi promoter and coach Rana Balachauria during the Sohana Kabaddi Cup in Mohali has taken a serious turn, with gangster Dony Bal claiming responsibility for the attack. The claim surfaced through a Facebook post under the name Gopi Ghanshyampuria, though it has not been independently verified.
In the post, Dony Bal, along with several other named individuals, alleged that Balachauria had links with rival gang members Jaggu and Lawrence and accused him of sheltering individuals connected to the Sidhu Moosewala murder. The post claimed the killing was an act of revenge, sending shockwaves across Punjab.
Balachauria was shot at point-blank range after assailants reportedly posed as fans seeking selfies during the live tournament in Sector 82. Around 12 rounds were fired, triggering chaos at the venue. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The hospital later confirmed the victim as 30-year-old kabaddi player Kanwar Digvijay Singh.
The incident has ignited a political storm. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal blamed the AAP government for a complete collapse of law and order. Congress leaders Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and SAD spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler also slammed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging that Punjab has been surrendered to gangsters.
As police probe gang rivalry and analyse CCTV footage, the brazen attack at a public sporting event has intensified fears over public safety in the state.
