The Punjab government has ordered the Punjab government SSP suspension of Amritsar (Rural) SSP Maninder Singh, marking one of the strongest administrative actions taken this year. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the State must respond firmly to rising criminal activity, and he warned that the police cannot ignore serious threats. He stressed that officers must show discipline and speed in handling cases involving organised crime.
The suspension comes at a time when Opposition parties have intensified attacks on the AAP government. They claim the State is witnessing a steady rise in extortion attempts, targeted firings, and the re-emergence of gang groups in several districts. These incidents have pushed the government to increase pressure on senior police officers and demand stronger field-level coordination.
During the Tarn Taran bypoll campaign, Arvind Kejriwal made crime control a central issue. He assured voters that Punjab would not allow gang networks to operate freely, and he promised strict monitoring across border and rural zones. His statement raised public expectations, especially in areas that experienced repeated threats from criminal groups.
Officials in Chandigarh say the suspension sends a clear message that accountability is non-negotiable. They also expect district police chiefs to intensify surveillance, increase intelligence-sharing, and hold regular reviews of high-risk zones. Many officers believe stronger coordination with central agencies will further improve the crackdown.
Residents in Amritsar Rural and surrounding districts hope the decision leads to quicker police responses. Several community leaders have urged the government to increase night patrolling, protect shopkeepers from extortion calls, and strengthen anti-gang units. They say the public wants visible action, not only administrative orders.
As the government prepares additional measures to strengthen law and order, the focus now shifts to rebuilding public confidence. The suspension is seen as the beginning of a broader push toward stricter policing and improved security across Punjab.
