New Delhi:Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized the three new legal reform bills introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday. He alleged that these bills pave the way for the central government to arbitrarily and unilaterally remove elected representatives from office, pushing the nation back into a “medieval era.”
According to Gandhi, the bills allow for the removal of elected leaders such as Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Ministers if they are arrested in serious criminal cases and remain in custody for 30 consecutive days. He called this a violation of constitutional values and federal principles. “If someone in power doesn’t like your face, they can have the ED file a case against you and get you removed within 30 days,” he said. “This isn’t just undemocratic it’s a system of fear.”
Gandhi also questioned the sudden and silent resignation of former Vice President Dhankhar, calling it mysterious. “Why has he disappeared from public life without explanation?” he asked.
He added that democratic institutions are being weakened, and independent bodies are being misused, creating an atmosphere of fear among elected representatives. Opposition parties have already expressed serious objections to the bills.
