The Supreme Court judges increased after the central government issued an ordinance to create four new posts in the apex court. The decision aims to speed up case hearings and reduce the heavy backlog.
With this step, the total strength of the Supreme Court will rise from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. The government took this decision to improve the court’s efficiency and handle the growing number of cases.
The judiciary has faced a rising workload in recent years. More judges will help the court hear cases faster and deliver judgments without long delays.
The Supreme Court Collegium will soon recommend names to fill the new positions. After the appointments, the court will function with its expanded strength.
The government may also introduce a bill in Parliament during the next session to replace the ordinance with a permanent law.
