A tragic incident at Jadavpur University has raised fresh concerns over campus safety after a third-year English honours student was found dead near a pond inside the university premises late Thursday night.
Witnesses said the student was spotted unconscious by the pond close to Gate No. 4, near the undergraduate arts building, while a cultural programme was taking place on campus. Security guards and fellow students rushed to her aid and pulled her from the water. She was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police officials said the preliminary suspicion points to drowning, though the exact cause will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination. Investigators have sealed the area and collected evidence while questioning students and staff who were present during the event.
The student was not a resident of any on-campus hostel. Her identity has not been released publicly, pending confirmation with her family. Senior university authorities, along with faculty members, visited the hospital and the pond site after the incident.
The sudden death has left the student community shocked. Many have demanded stricter safety measures during late-night programmes and better monitoring of vulnerable parts of the campus. Faculty members also stressed that incidents like this highlight the urgent need for stronger security protocols.
For now, police say they are keeping all possibilities open. Whether the death was accidental, self-inflicted, or involved foul play will only be clear once the forensic and post-mortem reports arrive. The investigation is ongoing.
